The Tigray Region of northern Ethiopia is a semi-arid region that is a difficult environment for agriculture.  The soil is rocky, the terrain rugged, and rainfall tends to average around 586 mm (2.3 inches) per year, mainly in the summer.  There are significant variations in rainfall due to elevation (ranging from 500 to 3200 meters above sea level) and local geography.  Drought has occurred frequently.  Between 1900 and 2010, for example, the region experienced 12 major droughts, half of which occurred between 1957 and 1994, often with devastating results.

Today, northern Ethiopia is again suffering from drought conditions, in addition to infestations of locusts that damage crops. However, the largest factor in creating the current nutritional crisis in Tigray is human action. During The Tigray War (2020-2022), invading forces burned crops, destroyed and looted grain stores, deliberately killed livestock, burned houses and shelters, and devastated the local transportation infrastructure. Most of the regional healthcare infrastructure was also looted or destroyed. Hundreds of thousands of civilians were displaced from their land and homes. As of 2025, there are still over 1,000,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Tigray, living in camps and trying to survive on less-than-adequate  humanitarian aid because they are unable to cultivate their fields and to feed themselves.

The Fewsi Therapeutic Food Project offers a quick and effective solution to address the widespread famine and we need your help! Your donation of just $40 can save a child’s life. Donate today!
