AboutTHE FEWSI THERAPEUTIC FOOD PROJECT

The Fewsi Therapeutic Food Project is The Fewsi Foundation’s humanitarian, not-for-profit program that addresses the rampant malnutrition crisis in Tigray. The project involves preparation of “Fewsi Food”, Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), which has been scientifically proven to swiftly reverse the effects of severe acute malnutrition in women and children.
Our in-country team produces Fewsi Food (RUTF) at our new production facility in Mekelle on the grounds of the Tigray Health Research Institute. We locally source all the peanut paste, sugar, vegetable oil and sorghum flour that we use. The special vitamin/mineral supplement and the powdered milk required must be imported. Our production team has been trained by Dr. Mark Manary and the staff at Project Peanut Butter.
Fewsi Therapeutic Food is produced, packaged, and distributed FREE OF CHARGE by the Tigray Regional Health Bureau through designated clinical facilities. It is NEVER sold commercially or on the open market.
As this project takes off, we hope to be able to replicate it in other cities in the Tigray Region and make a huge impact on northern Ethiopia’s malnutrition crisis!
